Lack of recent Pictures

Posted by Barry Proctor on Saturday, August 15, 2015,
Due to other commitments, we have had no time to take any pictures to post on this website.
And the way things are going its looking unlikely we will get any this year either.

Because of this I have taken a few pictures on my phone of some of the birds in the Aviary
these are just a few birds I like the look of.
nothing specific and of different ages, just good looking birds
Because they are just taken on my phone and not prepped birds
(I have cropped the pictures, but not used any filters or Phot...

The use of Wheat in the birds diet

Posted by Barry Proctor on Wednesday, October 22, 2014,
It has come to our attention that there is a rumour going around that we use wheat in the birds diet.
We would like to make it clear
We do not, and will not advocate the use of wheat in any birds diet.
Our reasoning being -
Today's modern farming techniques use far too many pesticides/insecticides and other chemicals to produce their crops.
There is no way to be 100% certain  that  THESE ARE NOT HARMFUL TO THE BIRDS
We acknowledge that there are many out there who do feed whe...

B.S. World Champion 2013

Posted by Barry Proctor on Monday, November 18, 2013,
Have to say Congratulations to Richard & Michael on winning the B.S. World Show.
A Tremendous achievement considering the week before hand.
And considering the bird that won was not looking its best on the Thursday.
Michael was convinced the Bird wouldnt make the show.
He worked on the bird right up until show time.
Gave it a lot of TLC, extra warmth, and a lot of prayers I think.
Even Richard doubted it would make the show.
The Bird picked up on Friday Morning, was kept isolated and in a heated b...

Video loss & Update

Posted by Barry Proctor on Monday, September 23, 2013,
A quick Apology for the loss of video on the site over the last couple of days.
A minor hiccup with my Google account.
I think I have it sorted and the site seems to be running correctly now.

As an update
We now have the Aviary fully operational again and have paired up the first round of birds yesterday (Sun 22/09/2013)
I should have posted after the full clean up we have recently done.
All the nest boxes have been dipped with an insecticide solution (something we always do as a precaution)

Final Aviary changes

Posted by Barry Proctor on Monday, August 26, 2013,
I think we have finally got to the end of the Aviary changes.
We have now replaced all the old wooden fronted cages with new Aluminium fronted cages.
There was a lot more work to it than we first thought and its taken up quite a bit of time.
During which the breeding has been put on hold for a while.
Though we have bred quite a few birds already this year.
The new page can be found in the gallery at the end of the Aviary changes
or by clicking here

Almost a year ?

Posted by Barry Proctor on Monday, April 1, 2013,
Wow, I cant believe its been almost a year since I last posted anything.
A lot has happened, its been a very quick year.
I have added a couple of videos in the how to section, along with a video of Dyanne syringe feeding a very young bird.
too young to spoon feed.
I added some pics of the latest developments in the Aviary a short while back.
its almost done now. just the nestboxes to re-vamp next.
Though that might take a while. it needs a bit of thinking about before we start.

Richard has some pi...

New page

Posted by Barry Proctor on Tuesday, May 1, 2012,
Been a long time again. mainly due to my personal life. Though I do keep trying to get back here and update things. I have added a new page in the "how to" section showing what I have been up to these last few days.
I found it very emotional writing the last bit. even had to pause before posting it.
Im sure you will understand when you have seen it.

We are still trying to find time to update the pictures of this years birds But we will get there eventually.
it should be worth the wait :-)

Guest book

Posted by Barry Proctor on Monday, February 13, 2012,
There may be a bit of confusion caused by our Guestbook. While I thank each and everyone of you who took the trouble to sign and post comments, Im afraid I have to remove and replace it.
the plug in "HTML Gear" is closing down on the 1st April 2012. (Im assured its not an April fools joke)
So I will be removing it shortly and hopefully will have found a suitable replacement to put in place at the same time.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused during this transition
it should only be a minor setb...

Better late than never

Posted by Barry Proctor on Saturday, January 28, 2012,
First post of 2012 and Im apologising already. Its been a busy start to the year. More alterations to the Aviary. over 100 birds rung already. (which brings me to the new section I have added called "How To")
I have tried various forms of adding Video to this site. and have now admitted defeat.
I have tried html code. flash conversion even considered changing the programme code to allow it. I have now gone with You tube links. which will have to do for now. Maybe the host site will upgrade th...

Goodbye to 2011

Posted by Barry Proctor on Wednesday, December 28, 2011,
This will be my last Blog this year. I hope you all had a great Christmas and are looking forward to 2012 with as much anticipation as I am. ( though probably for different reasons )
Its been a good year .  We have had ups and downs along the way. Some great laughs, some tears and disappointments. A lot of surprises.  But on the whole a good year.
I am pleased with the way this website has turned out, and again I thank you all for your comments.
I have to thank Richard and Michael for allowing...

I have added a new page to the picture gallery (Aviary changes) and updated the 3 nestboxes.
I Apologise for missing the growing birds in box 27. the Aviary Alterations took up a bit more of my time than I expected. but with the need to get the staging flight up and ready I'm sure you will understand our priorities.
there are still a few minor alterations to be done and i will post images when we have done them.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all who have signed the gues...

Window of opportunity

Posted by Barry Proctor on Sunday, November 13, 2011,
Its been a while since my last update. Mainly due to my other duties cleaning poultry sheds.
During this time Richard and Michael are left to cope on their own.
Things have changed drastically in my absence.
To start with Michael has changed the layout of the Aviary. Cupboards have be removed and changed, a flight has gone missing Cages have been moved. and that's just the beginning.
He is re modelling the second half of the Aviary.

The timing of these changes is mainly due to a Timing error w...

Trying new products

Posted by Barry Proctor on Monday, October 24, 2011,
You may have noticed in the medication section (another section that will be updated as and when we use something throughout the year) we are trying out a new wormer. Its always a worry when you try a new product. Unfortunately this always results in test subjects. this usually falls on the surplus stock. (which is a very good reason to keep some.)
As I mentioned in the medication section, our normal wormer Moxidectin has been brought under new restrictions and is awaiting test results which c...

Ring, ring, ring...

Posted by Barry Proctor on Friday, October 7, 2011,
Our breeding season is now underway with the first chick rung with ring number MIL1-223-11 (bearing in mind that the 2011 breeding season started with 80 chicks being rung on 2010 rings).

The fact is that with our birds coming into peak breeding condition in September, we can no longer wait to pair our birds so as to allow the first round chicks to be rung on current year rings. If the ring issue date were moved then this would not be a problem but this is an issue that has been debated for so...

Time to start all over again.

Posted by Barry Proctor on Monday, October 3, 2011,
It seems a lot of these blogs are about time. The Club Show is over and the results are in (ours can be found in features section).
Firstly, I must thank you all for the emails, phone calls and text messages we have been inundated with today. The team did very well and if lady luck had been on our side, maybe we could have gone even further - that's budgerigars for you!

It's time to move on and prepare for next year where we hope to put out an even more successful show team and maybe even re...

Marvellous sunshine (or Not !)

Posted by Barry Proctor on Wednesday, September 28, 2011,
As I am writing this blog, Richard and Michael are doing another marathon stint in the Aviary trying to prepare the show birds for the Club Show. This heat wave we are now experiencing is playing havoc with their plans and just adds weight to their preference for having the show put back to November when their birds will have gone through the moult naturally and be in peak condition. Trying to keep an even temperature (around 15C ) is difficult when the ambient temp outside is touching 30C.

Conflict of interest

Posted by Barry Proctor on Thursday, September 15, 2011,
It has been a frustrating week, which I'm sure a lot of fanciers can relate to at this time of year.
Due to a combination of factors, the majority of the birds have come into peak breeding condition. In particular, given the weather conditions in Cumbria at this time of year (heavy rain!) the birds seem to naturally want to breed. Richard placed two of the best young hens into show cages last week and as he did so, they went down to tread in his hand. This is certainly not an isolated case w...

Running out of time

Posted by Barry Proctor on Saturday, September 10, 2011,
With just a few short weeks until the BS World Show, I am now realising just what a task I have undertaken with building a website for Richard and Michael. It is certainly a lot more time consuming than I first thought.

Although I am enjoying the learning experience, I had hoped to be a lot further on than I am right now. I have spent considerable time trying to set up a lightbox gallery but so far it is proving to be beyond my understanding so the re-direct to a gallery and slide show site wi...

The time it takes

Posted by Barry Proctor on Monday, August 22, 2011,
I suppose this could be classed as the start of the season.
The Aviary has been given its usual priority cleaning (this happens twice a year on top of the usual daily and weekly routines). By priority cleaning I mean the flights have been emptied and pressure washed, Steam cleaned if you like. Then disinfected with Vircon S.  All the breeding cages get the same treatment. everything is stripped and cleaned (though we do use our own special mixture for these) the nestboxes were cleaned singul...

Who is Barry Proctor?

Posted by Richard Miller on Thursday, August 18, 2011,
Hello everyone and welcome to our web site.

Whilst many of you will know my father and I, almost all of you will be wondering: who is Barry Proctor?

Barry has been working behind the scenes since we started in the hobby. His efforts have played a key part in the day to day running of our aviary of budgerigars, which has in turn brought about our success.

Barry knows all of our tricks of the trade and I wish to make it absolutely clear that he is not susceptible to bribes in return for disclosing...

The Beginning

Barry Proctor I'm the hidden face lurking behind R & M Miller's Budgerigar world. I am attempting to set up this website to bring you inside that world. I intend to give you an inside view as to what goes on in the aviary, as much as possible from selecting breeding pairs, feeding regimes, medication and cleaning routines. I intend to do this with the full support of Michael and Richard Miller. It may take a while to get this up and running properly. Hopefully the full web site should be in place in time for the Budgerigar Society World Championship Show 2011.
